Amazing Athletes of San Diego

One Amazing Athlete Can Name The Entire Padres Roster!

On July 1st, the San Diego Padres played the Los Angeles Dodgers in an 8 – 0 loss, but in the crowd, one little Padre brought the light shining back on the team! 3-year-old Kameron Brummer was showing off his special skills in announcing most of the Padres players with 100% accuracy! He even named a player who left the team years ago! Kameron Brummer’s impressive knowledge of the current Padres roster was captured on video by his mom, Sonja Brummer (Owner of Amazing Athletes of San Diego). The toddler can be heard naming each player on the San Diego Padres roster, with gusto and spirit.

“My kid can’t name any dinosaurs or presidents but he can name all of the Padres players! I thought Padres fans would enjoy this,” Sonja Brummer joked when she spoke with FOX 5 about her son.

Kameron along with his older brother, Kyson, have been attending Padres games since they were babies.  Their parents, Sonja and Randy, take them to home games frequently, and each member of the family is a Padres season ticket holder.  In fact, Kyson and Kameron can be seen on every Compadres kids passport as the cover kids!

Sonja stated that Kameron likes to “get into character” and pretend to be each player. His favorite, of course, is Wil Myers, though. “We did not teach Kameron all this. He learned on his own from watching so many games.” Sonja said baseball brings her family together. For her boys, baseball is life. “I can’t imagine baseball not being in their lives,” she said.

Kyson and Kameron both participate in Amazing Athletes program. Sonja says that their coaches have to bring an extra baseball bat for them after class so they can further progress their baseball skills.

At the rate both Kameron and his brother are going, it shouldn’t be much longer that we will see these future Baseball Stars take the field at Petco Park.

Franchisee of the Month Spotlight

brummerThis month, Amazing Athletes of San Diego owner, Sonja Brummer, is celebrating 10 years as part of the Amazing Athletes team, and she can’t imagine her life without it.

Sonja first began coaching for Amazing Athletes while she was in college — back before franchises were even being sold. After graduating and seeing the rapid growth of the program on a national scale, Sonja and her husband Randy couldn’t think of anything better than buying into the thriving, children’s fitness franchise. Now, 10 years later, she and Randy have experienced a decade of tremendous growth and business achievements, they have become thought leaders and educators in early childhood development in their San Diego community, and they have enjoyed the growth of their beautiful, happy, and healthy family.

Sonja was raised in a world of sports. She was a gymnast for 13 years, her mother owned a gymnastics facility, and her father and grandfather were both NBA coaches, so a career in sports was a natural fit. Randy too was always active in sports growing up, and, together, they valued the many benefits their active and athletic lifestyle offered. After graduating from college, Sonja and Randy couldn’t think of anything better than owning their own Amazing Athletes franchise and bought their first franchise in San Diego in 2008.

While Randy makes a living outside of Amazing Athletes as an engineer, he also helps Sonja out in the office, making the business a family endeavor. When they first began their business adventure, they had 75 little athletes enrolled in three schools. The following year, the opportunity arose and they purchased three more franchise territories in San Diego County and rapidly grew to 700 students enrolled in 31 school locations. In 2010, Randy and Sonja were awarded with Amazing Athletes’ 2010 “Franchisee of the Year” award, as well as honored with a “500+ enrollment” award.

Sonja-Brummer-2-1Today, Randy and Sonja’s sports enrichment program is an integral part of the fabric of the San Diego early education community. They are also proud sponsors of many local youth soccer, basketball and baseball teams in their community and enjoy supporting and cheering on their alumni athletes as they move from non-competitive to competitive or school sports.

Sonja and her staff are often the first introduction many kids have with coaches and sports, and she delights in the fact that she can watch kids in her non-competitive classroom grow at their own pace and build a true love for sports (Go Padres!), fitness, and healthy lifelong habits at such an early age.

“It’s been fun to see Amazing Athletes grow to be as big as it is today from 10 years ago. When I first started, we only taught the basic fundamentals of 6 sports. Today, we teach 9 sports and have also incorporated a food and nutrition component, making our program even more valuable,” she said. “I’m so lucky to have a career that I enjoy that also makes an impact in the lives of young children.”

Randy and Sonja are proud of their business accomplishments over the years, but their biggest accomplishment, they say, is becoming proud parents to their two young sons, Kyson and Kameron. Sonja’s proudest moment to date is when her son was old enough to finally join the Amazing Athletes team, beginning his own journey toward a lifetime of healthy habits and sports fun!

Little Steps Preschool Churns out Generations of Amazing Athletes

With childhood obesity on the rise, residual cuts to grade-school physical education and health programs, and the advent of addicting entertainment technology, some children are straying away from physical exercise and relying more on video games or television to occupy their time.

VolleyballSports-based youth fitness provider Amazing Athletes hopes to counter that trend by getting kids off the couch and into an active classroom with year-round programs designed to get children moving through instructional sports activities. The program focuses on preschool-age students as young as 2 years old to help lay a strong foundation of healthy habits from an early age.

“A lot of other programs don’t focus on kids this young, and we’re really starting to get a high obesity rate in kids [aged] two to four,” said Sonja Brummer, owner of four Amazing Athletes franchises in San Diego. “We really want to focus on getting them active and show them that it can be fun to be active.”

Through what she calls “positive play,” Brummer explained the program is neither a classroom environment nor free-play recess. It utilizes the best of both — combining a fun outlet for energy release with educational development and discipline.

“We talk about eating healthy, getting your sleep and eating your fruits and vegetables,” she said. “We incorporate a lot of things from the classroom, too — letters, numbers, colors, animals, some math, sometimes Spanish — so it’s more than just a sports program.”

At Little Steps Christian Preschool on Mt. Soledead, preschoolers take weekly Amazing Athletes classes to develop mental, physical and cognitive skills like hand-eye coordination, following directions, and speed and agility. Throughout the curriculum, students learn the basics of nine sports, which are rotated each week throughout the year.

DSC_0659“At this age, we’re not so much teaching them the rules of the game. We’re teaching them how to kick, how to throw,” said Brummer. “Especially for the 2-year-olds, it’s more of an exploratory class.”

As kids get older, the classes become more structured, she said.

“We’ll have some of these kids from 2 to 6 or 7 years old, so we don’t want them to get bored,” she said. “As they go up in age, we also progress their skill level.”

And thanks to small class sizes, the program’s coaches are able to work with each child according to his or her ability.

“Any kid can do this. We’ve had kids with disabilities, like cerebral palsy, and the doctors recommend it,” she said. “We had one girl in particular who, when she first started, couldn’t even hold up the baseball bat. Within a year or two, she was swinging the bat like it was nothing.”

In addition to the brain and motor-skill development, the program helps children build self-confidence when it comes to social and physical activity in grade school.

“By the time they get to elementary school, they probably have a wider knowledge of sports than other kids. We try to get them ahead of the game,” she said.

The wide range of sports the students are exposed to help to keep them from getting “frustrated when they’re in elementary school in PE or in team sports,” Brummer said.

“I always get extra sad when it comes time for them to leave the schools, especially when we’ve had them for so many years,” she said. “At the same time, it’s so great to see them develop a love for sports and activities and to see them progress from when they could barely walk to running, jumping and kicking.”

Amazing Athletes offers year-round program registration, birthday parties and camps for children of all ages. Franchise opportunities are also available. Visit www.aa.soccersandbox.com or call (888) 228-3942 for more information.
